One Recruitment Has No Exam At All
India Post GDS is selected purely on your Class 10 marks. No written test, no interview — a merit list built from percentages, circle by circle. If your 10th marks were strong, this is the single best-odds government recruitment open to you, and it is worth applying to every cycle.
The catch is that marks are all you have. There is no way to improve your position later, and cut-offs in competitive circles run high. Apply to the circle where your percentage is actually competitive rather than the one nearest home.
What Pays What
Most 10th-level posts sit at Pay Level 1 to Level 3 — a basic of ₹18,000 to ₹21,700, landing roughly ₹30,000 to ₹43,000 in hand once DA and HRA are added and NPS and CGHS come off.
GDS is the exception and is not on the pay matrix at all. Gramin Dak Sevaks are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance, typically ₹10,000 to ₹29,380 a month depending on the post and hours, with a different benefits structure to a regular departmental post.
An ITI Roughly Doubles Your Options
10th alone qualifies you for Group D, MTS, GD Constable and GDS. Add an ITI in a relevant trade and RRB Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician open up — Level 2 posts with a clear promotion ladder and, for running staff, kilometreage allowance that often exceeds the basic pay itself.
The trade has to match the one named in the notification. An ITI in a trade the CEN does not list counts for nothing, so check the trade list before enrolling in a course on the assumption it will help.
Three Things That Get Candidates Eliminated
- The physical test is a real filter, not a formality. Group D has a PET, and GD Constable has both PET and PST with height and chest standards. A large share of candidates who clear the written paper fail here.
- Age is counted on the notification's cut-off date. Not the day you apply. A birthday in between changes nothing — work it out before paying the fee.
- The medical standard eliminates people late in the process. Vision requirements for railway safety posts are strict, and for ALP the A-1 standard is the strictest in non-uniformed railway recruitment. Get your eyes checked before you invest a year.
Be Realistic About the Odds
A Group D cycle routinely draws millions of applications for a few thousand posts. That is not a reason to skip it, but it is a reason to apply widely rather than pinning a year on one result.
The sensible pattern is to sit every exam you are eligible for, keep GDS applications going each cycle since they cost you nothing but marks you already have, and use an ITI or a 12th pass to widen the list while you wait.
