Selection Process

Application scrutiny for nationality, age, qualification, and sporting performance, Document Verification before a Selection Committee, a Ground/Field Proficiency Test in the candidate's sport, an additional Data Entry Skill Test (8,000 key depressions/hour) for Tax Assistant candidates, with final selection strictly in order of merit.

The Income Tax Department, West Bengal & Sikkim Region, has invited applications from meritorious sportspersons for 82 posts — 25 Tax Assistant and 57 Multi-Tasking Staff — across 17 recognised Games/Sports, under DoPT's sports-quota recruitment scheme. This is open only to sportspersons meeting specific national/state/university-level sporting criteria, not general applicants. Physical applications must reach the Kolkata office by 30 September 2026.

Who Should Apply

  • Tax Assistant (TA), 25 posts — sportspersons with a Degree from a recognised University (or equivalent), aged 18 to 27 as on 1 July 2026.
  • Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), 57 posts — sportspersons with a Matriculation (Class 10) pass or equivalent, aged 18 to 25 as on 1 July 2026.

You can apply for TA, MTS, or both in a single application, stating your order of preference — if you don't state a preference, you'll first be considered for TA, then MTS, subject to eligibility. Vacancies span 17 Games/Sports: Cricket, Football, Athletics, Basketball, Swimming, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Kabaddi, Bridge, Chess, Carrom, Body Building, Badminton, Archery, Karate, Lawn Tennis, and Para Athletics, each with its own men's/women's and position/event-specific vacancy breakup in the official notification.

Eligibility & Age Limit

You must be an Indian citizen and meet one of these sporting criteria: represented a State or India in a National or International competition; a medal winner in Junior National Championships, Khelo India Youth Games (above 18 years), Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games, Khelo India University Games, or School Games Federation of India events; represented your University in Inter-University Tournaments; or represented a State School Team in National Sports/Games for Schools. For Chess specifically: a Grand Master or International Master title (Open Category), Chess Olympiad participation, National Open Chess Championship, or a medal in the National Team Chess Championship.

Educational qualification — Degree for TA, Matriculation for MTS — must be held on or before 1 July 2026; anything obtained after that date isn't considered. Age as on 1 July 2026: 18-27 for TA, 18-25 for MTS. Age relaxation: 5 years for UR/OBC candidates, 10 years for SC/ST candidates, per DoPT OM No. DOPT-1720781414772 dated 04.03.2024 — available only to candidates who meet every other eligibility condition and furnish the prescribed Annexure-C certificate.

Only sporting participation/achievement between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026 counts (the tournament's closing date must fall in this window). You must also be clear in all WADA/NADA doping tests and not disqualified or banned by any sports federation for disciplinary reasons.

  1. Download and fill the application form in the prescribed Annexure-A format, in black or blue ink, in Capital Letters.
  2. Attach a recent colour, front-facing passport-size photograph (no spectacles, sunglasses, or headgear), attested by a Gazetted Officer.
  3. Attach Gazetted-Officer-attested photocopies of all supporting documents for nationality, date of birth, age, educational qualification, caste, and sports achievements.
  4. Write this exact phrase on the envelope: "APPLICATION FOR THE POST(S) OF ___________ FOR RECRUITMENT OF MERITORIOUS SPORTS PERSONS IN INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT, WEST BENGAL & SIKKIM."
  5. Send the completed application by Normal Post/Speed Post/Registered Post/Courier to: Office of the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Headquarters (Personnel & Establishment), 1st Floor, Room No-14, Aayakar Bhawan, P-7 Chowringhee Square, Kolkata – 700069, to reach on or before 30 September 2026. Physical presence for submission isn't required.
  6. Additionally, fill and submit the supplementary Google Form at forms.gle/sf7iXVo1WeosAjtV6 — this doesn't replace the physical application, and if the two disagree, your physical application is treated as final.

How Are Candidates Selected

Scrutiny: Applications are checked for nationality, age, educational qualification, and best sporting performances between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026.

Selection Criteria (order of preference): 1) International representation with Department of Sports clearance; 2) State/UT representation in Senior/Junior National Championships or National Games with a medal or top-3 finish (Senior medal winners preferred over Junior); 3) University representation in Inter-University or Khelo India University Games with a medal or top-3 finals finish; 4) State/UT representation in Khelo India Youth/Winter/Para Games with a medal or top-3 finals finish; 5) State School representation in National School Games with a medal or top-3 finish; 6) the same levels (2-5) without a medal, in the same order. Ties break first on higher achievement within the reckoning period, then on cumulative medal count.

Document Verification: Before a Selection Committee, using only the attested photocopies and Forms submitted with your original application — anything submitted later isn't considered. Already-employed candidates must submit an NOC from their current employer here.

Ground/Field Proficiency Test: Evaluates your proficiency in your specific sport/game.

Data Entry Skill Test (TA only): 8,000 key depressions per hour, additionally required for Tax Assistant candidates.

Final Selection: Strictly in order of merit, combining your best sporting performance (2022-2026) with your Ground/Field Proficiency Test marks. Clearing any stage confers no automatic right to appointment.

Why This Job Matters

The Income Tax Department is one of India's largest Central Government departments, and this sports-quota route — run under a specific 2024 DoPT policy — is a dedicated pathway for accomplished sportspersons into stable government service. With 82 posts across 17 different sports and a genuinely detailed, tiered preference system (international down to school-level achievement), it's one of the more structured sports-quota drives currently open, though it's specific to West Bengal & Sikkim postings.

The FreshersLike Take

Best fit: This is a strong fit if you have genuine, documented sporting achievement in one of the 17 listed sports at State, National, University, or School level between 2022 and 2026, and you have the specific certificate (Form 1-5, from the exact prescribed authority) to prove it.

Who should think twice: This route is closed to anyone without a qualifying sports record — strong academics alone won't help here, and the certificate must come from the exact competent authority listed in the notification (e.g., only the Secretary of the National Federation for National Competitions) or it won't be accepted at all. Aspiring TA candidates also need to clear a genuinely demanding Data Entry Skill Test (8,000 key depressions/hour) on top of the sports evaluation.

Practical tip: Your certificates must be in the exact prescribed Form (1 through 5, per Annexure-D) and signed personally by the specific designated authority (Secretary of the National Federation, Dean of Sports, etc.) — a certificate from the wrong signatory, even for a genuine achievement, risks being rejected outright, so double-check the authority table in the notification against your own certificate before you submit.

Documents Required

  • Application Form (Annexure-A)
  • Photo Identity Proof (Aadhaar/Voter Card/PAN Card/Driving Licence/Passport)
  • Address Proof (Aadhaar/Voter Card/Driving Licence/Passport)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Mark sheet & Certificate of Class 10
  • Mark sheet & Certificate of Class 12 (if applicable)
  • Mark sheets & Certificate of Graduation (mandatory for TA applicants)
  • Mark sheets & Certificates of any other educational qualifications (if applicable)
  • Caste Certificate (Annexure-C1/C2, if applicable)
  • PwBD Certificate (if applicable)
  • Certificates of Sports Achievements, in the specific prescribed Form (1-5, per Annexure-D) from the exact competent authority listed for your competition level
  • Self-Declaration (Annexure-B)
  • Age-relaxation/EWS Certificate (Annexure-C, if applicable)

All photocopies (items 2-11 in the notification's list) must be attested by a Gazetted Officer. Only one application per candidate is entertained — multiple applications lead to cancellation.

What Happens After Selection

Medical fitness will be ascertained by the Office of the Pr. CCIT, West Bengal & Sikkim, before formal appointment. Selected candidates are liable to be posted at any place or office under the Pr. CCIT's jurisdiction. No Travelling Allowance is paid for Document Verification, the Ground/Field Proficiency Test, or joining after selection. Furnishing false information or misrepresenting facts at any stage makes your candidature or appointment liable for cancellation.

Common Questions

What is the last date to apply for Income Tax Kolkata Sports Quota Recruitment 2026?

Your physical application must reach the Kolkata office by 30 September 2026. Physical presence for submission isn't required — post is accepted.

Can a non-sportsperson apply for these posts?

No. This recruitment is open exclusively to meritorious sportspersons meeting one of the specific sporting criteria (State/National/International representation, or a qualifying medal/position) listed in the notification — general applicants aren't eligible regardless of academic qualification.

Can I apply for both TA and MTS?

Yes, in a single application, stating your order of preference. If you don't state one, you're first considered for TA, then MTS, subject to eligibility.

Is there an application fee?

Check — not specified in the notification.

Do I need to submit the Google Form as well as the postal application?

Yes, both — the Google Form is an additional processing/screening requirement and doesn't replace the physical application. If they conflict, your physical application is treated as final.

Will my sports achievement from before 2022 count?

No. Only participation/achievement between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026 is considered, and the tournament's closing date must fall within that window.

Can a diploma holder apply for Tax Assistant?

No. Tax Assistant specifically requires a Degree from a recognised University or an equivalent qualification — a diploma alone doesn't meet this bar.

Is there a correction window if I make a mistake in my application?

Check — the notification doesn't describe a correction window for the physical application; it states applications without proper attestation, photographs, signatures, or required annexures will simply be rejected without further correspondence.
