Selection Process
Computer Based Test (CBT), followed by Computer Based
East Coast Railway, through its Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) at Bhubaneswar, has notified 1,421 vacancies under the 2026 General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE). This is not an open-market recruitment: only eligible regular East Coast Railway employees with lien in ECoR can apply, and online registration is open from 15 August 2026 to 14 September 2026.
Who Should Apply
- Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) --- 1,046 posts: Matriculation/SSLC plus relevant ITI or Act Apprenticeship, or the specified engineering diploma/degree route.
- Station Master --- 12 posts: Degree from a recognised university or equivalent.
- Goods Trains Manager --- 284 posts: Degree from a recognised university or equivalent.
- Junior Engineer --- 22 posts: Relevant three-year engineering diploma or specified B.Sc./engineering qualification, depending on the JE discipline.
- Technicians --- 51 posts: Generally Matriculation/SSLC plus relevant ITI or Act Apprenticeship, with the exact trade depending on the Technician category.
- Junior Clerk cum Typist --- 4 posts: 12th (+2 Stage) or equivalent with at least 50% aggregate marks, subject to the notification's exemptions, plus English/Hindi computer typing proficiency.
- Commercial Clerk cum Ticket Collector --- 2 posts: 12th (+2 Stage) or equivalent with at least 50% aggregate marks, subject to the notification's exemptions.
The vacancies cover UR, SC, ST and OBC categories, with one PwBD vacancy against Junior Engineer. The detailed division/unit and post-wise breakup is in Annexure-A of the official notification.
Eligibility & Age Limit
This is a departmental GDCE recruitment. Only regular eligible employees of East Coast Railway, including the erstwhile Waltair Division/SCoR, who hold lien in ECoR can apply. RPF/RPSF staff are excluded, and employees who have resigned or transferred to another railway are not eligible.
The age range is 18 to 42 years for UR candidates, 18 to 45 years for OBC candidates, and 18 to 47 years for SC/ST candidates, with age reckoned as on 1 January 2027. SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies do not receive the category age relaxation.
Educational eligibility varies by post. ALP and several Technician posts use Matriculation/SSLC with relevant ITI or Act Apprenticeship routes. Station Master and Goods Trains Manager require a recognised university degree. JE posts require the relevant engineering diploma or specified equivalent qualification. Junior Clerk cum Typist and Commercial Clerk cum Ticket Collector require 12th-level qualification with the conditions in Annexure-B. Candidates awaiting the final result of the required qualification should not apply.

Salary & Pay Scale

How to Apply
- Open the official East Coast Railway online application portal.
- Select the application link for GDCE Notification No. ECoR/Pers/RRC-GDCE/2026.
- Enter your personal and service/bio-data details carefully.
- Keep your IPAS ID, HRMS ID and date of birth ready.
- Upload a recent colour passport-size photograph: 35 mm × 45 mm, not older than three months, JPEG, 100 DPI and up to 100 KB.
- Upload your scanned signature made with black ink on white paper inside a 50 mm × 20 mm box. Preferred digital dimensions are 140 × 60 pixels, with a file size of 10 KB to 40 KB.
- Upload self-attested documents for date of birth, educational/technical qualification, caste and PwBD status where applicable.
- Select post preferences carefully. Once submitted, the preference cannot be changed.
- Submit the application and note the unique application number.
- Download and print the completed application PDF.
- Get the printed application forwarded by the controlling officer and upload the signed scanned copy under supporting documents. This is mandatory.
- Save the acknowledgement and registration details.
Only one online application is required even when applying for multiple notified posts. Once registered, changes are not permitted and duplicate applications are not entertained.

How Are Candidates Selected
Computer Based Test
All notified posts use a Computer Based Test (CBT). The duration and question count vary by post. ALP has a 120-minute CBT with 100 questions; Station Master and Goods Trains Manager have 90-minute CBTs with 120 questions; Junior Engineer has a 120-minute CBT with 150 questions; and Technician posts have a 90-minute CBT with 100 questions.
There is negative marking of one-third of the marks allotted to a question for each wrong answer in CBT. Minimum qualifying percentages are 40% for UR, 30% for OBC-NCL, 30% for SC and 25% for ST, with the limited PwBD relaxation stated in the notification.
Aptitude Test / Typing Test
ALP and Station Master candidates who qualify in CBT are shortlisted for the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). CBAT has no negative marking. For ALP, final merit uses 50% CBT and 50% CBAT; for Station Master, it uses 70% CBT and 30% CBAT.
Junior Clerk cum Typist candidates take the Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) after CBT. The other notified posts do not have an additional aptitude or typing test.
Document Verification and Medical Examination
Candidates equal to the number of vacancies are shortlisted for Document Verification based on the applicable merit. Appointment is subject to prescribed medical fitness, final verification of educational and community certificates, and verification of antecedents/character.
