Eligibility

Candidates must have passed 10th standard (Secondary School Examination) with passing marks in Mathematics and English from a recognised board, must have studied Tamil as the local language up to 10th standard, and must have basic knowledge of computers and cycling along with an adequate independent source of livelihood besides the GDS allowance.

Selection Process

System-generated Merit List based on 10th standard marks (converted to a percentage where needed), followed by Document Verification at the concerned Divisional office.

The Department of Posts has opened Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment for the Tamil Nadu Circle under Notification No. 17-12/2026-GDS dated 20 August 2026, covering 2095 posts of Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak across 44 divisions in Tamil Nadu. Any 10th-pass candidate aged 18 to 40 who has studied Tamil up to 10th standard can apply. Online applications close on 21 September 2026 at 5:00 PM.

Who Should Apply

  • Branch Postmaster (BPM) — 10th pass candidates willing to run a Branch Post Office, including arranging their own accommodation for it.
  • Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) — 10th pass candidates who will assist the BPM with postal operations, IPPB transactions, and mail delivery.
  • Dak Sevak — 10th pass candidates posted in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, or Delivery Centres, mainly handling mail and parcel movement.

All three posts share the same basic 10th-pass eligibility; the difference is mainly in job profile and duty location.

Eligibility & Age Limit

You need a 10th standard pass certificate with passing marks in Mathematics and English from a recognised board, and you must have studied Tamil as your local language up to 10th standard. You also need basic computer knowledge, the ability to cycle, and an independent source of livelihood besides the GDS allowance, since GDS pay alone is not meant to be your sole income.

Age as on the last date of application (21.09.2026): minimum 18 years, maximum 40 years. Upper age relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, no relaxation for EWS, 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), 13 years for PwBD+OBC, and 15 years for PwBD+SC/ST.

Salary & Pay Scale

GDS posts are not paid on the regular Central Government pay matrix. Instead, they carry a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), which rises 3% annually subject to conditions, plus Dearness Allowance. The starting TRCA slabs are ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 for BPM and ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 for ABPM/Dak Sevak. GDS also get GDS Gratuity and a Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, but these are not equivalent to a regular Central Government employee's pay and benefits — the notification is explicit that GDS are not regular employees.

How to Apply

  1. Go to the official portal at indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement and complete One-Time Registration (OTR) with a valid mobile number and email ID — both get OTP-verified and cannot be changed later.
  2. Log in with your registration number and password, then fill in personal details, board/educational details, and your 10th standard marks exactly as they appear on your marksheet.
  3. Select your preferred Division and give post preferences based on the local language you studied and the vacancies open to you.
  4. Upload your photograph and signature in the exact prescribed format.
  5. Pay the application fee if applicable, then review the preview carefully before final submission — no corrections are allowed after submission except during the separate correction window.

Before uploading, resize your photo and signature to the exact spec — the notification requires a JPG/JPEG photo of 30–100 KB at 320×400 px (4:5 ratio) and a JPG/JPEG signature of 20–100 KB at 300×120 px (5:2 ratio); blurred uploads get the application rejected. You can also check your exact age as on the cut-off date before you apply.

How Are Candidates Selected

Merit List: There is no written exam or interview. A system-generated merit list is prepared purely from your 10th standard marks (or grade-to-marks conversion where the board issues grades), taken to 4 decimal places as a percentage.

Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates are informed by SMS and email and must report to the concerned Divisional office within 15 days for physical verification of original documents. Successful verification leads to a system-generated offer of provisional engagement.

Why This Job Matters

India Post is one of the largest postal networks in the world, and Gramin Dak Sevaks form the backbone of its rural delivery and banking (IPPB) reach. Tamil Nadu Circle's 2095 vacancies span 44 divisions from Chennai to Tirunelveli, making this one of the larger GDS cycles for the state, with the biggest single blocks of posts in Tiruvannamalai, Tirupur, and Erode divisions. It's a genuine entry point into a Central Government-linked role for 10th-pass candidates without a written exam.

The FreshersLike Take

Best fit: This suits a 10th-pass candidate from a rural or semi-urban Tamil Nadu background who wants a stable government-linked posting close to home and doesn't need a high starting salary right away — merit is purely marks-based, so there's no exam to prepare for.

Who should think twice: If you need a regular Central Government salary and pension-style benefits, look elsewhere — GDS pay is a TRCA allowance, not a regular pay scale, and the notification is explicit that you're expected to have another source of income. BPM candidates also need to arrange their own accommodation for the Branch Post Office at their own cost.

Practical tip: Since selection is 100% based on your 10th marks percentage, don't wait to double-check your marksheet details — any mismatch between your application and your original 10th certificate (name, DOB, parents' names) can get your candidature cancelled, so verify these against your certificate before you start filling the form, not after.

Documents Required

  • 10th standard marksheet (original + 2 self-attested photocopies)
  • Identity proof
  • Date of Birth proof
  • Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC, if claiming reservation)
  • EWS certificate (if applicable)
  • PwBD certificate (if applicable)
  • Transgender certificate (if applicable)
  • Medical certificate from a Government hospital/dispensary/Primary Health Centre (compulsory for all)

What Happens After Selection

Verified candidates receive a system-generated offer of provisional engagement immediately after successful document verification. You then have 30 days from the offer date to complete pre-engagement formalities, including a prescribed 3-day basic training and arranging accommodation (for BPM posts). Final engagement is confirmed after character/antecedent verification by police authorities and certificate verification from issuing authorities.
