How Are Candidates Selected

Computer Based Test (single stage): 100 questions for 100 marks, 90 minutes (120 minutes for candidates with a scribe). One-third of a mark is cut for each wrong answer.

Section Questions
Professional Ability 50
General Awareness 15
General Intelligence and Reasoning 15
Mathematics 10
General Science 10

This split applies to all posts except Junior Translator (Hindi), whose paper tests Hindi and English with general knowledge, reasoning, arithmetic and basic computer knowledge. At least 50% of its questions are on language (20% English, 30% Hindi).

Minimum qualifying marks: UR and EWS 40%, OBC-NCL and SC 30%, ST 25%. For PwBD candidates, 2 marks may be relaxed if there are not enough suitable candidates.

Translation Test (Junior Translator Hindi only): Up to 10 times the vacancies are called, in merit order. It is qualifying, with 60% needed. Final merit for this post is by CBT marks.

Document Verification and Medical Examination: Candidates are shortlisted on merit, and the final panel depends on certificates and the medical standard for the post. You are not offered another post if you fail the medical for the one you chose.

Why This Job Matters

Isolated Categories are small, specialist cadres in Indian Railways, such as the legal, translation, publicity, welfare and laboratory staff that the larger NTPC or Group D recruitments do not cover. Junior Translator (Hindi) is by far the largest post this round (79 of 191), and the legal posts start at Pay Level 7.

The FreshersLike Take

Best fit: A law graduate with 3 to 5 years at the Bar (Chief Law Assistant, Public Prosecutor), a postgraduate in Hindi and English with a translation diploma (Junior Translator), or a Class 12 Science (Physics and Chemistry) pass aged 30 or under for the Lab Assistant Grade III post.

Who should think twice: Apart from Lab Assistant, every post needs a degree or higher and some need years of practice or translation experience, and with one-third negative marking and only seven small cadres, competition for each seat will be intense.

Practical tip: You can apply to only one RRB, so open Annexure B before choosing, because seats are spread thinly: RRB Chennai, for example, has only 11 posts in this report (Junior Translator Hindi 3 at ICF and 4 at Southern Railway, Staff and Welfare Inspector 2 at ICF and 2 at Southern Railway).

Documents Required

  • Class 12 or Class 10 certificate for age and qualification, as the post needs
  • Degree, postgraduate or diploma certificates and mark sheets for your post
  • Bar enrolment and practice proof (Chief Law Assistant, Public Prosecutor)
  • Translation diploma, certificate or experience proof (Junior Translator Hindi)
  • Proof of date of birth
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS), where applicable
  • Disability certificate, where applicable
  • Ex-servicemen discharge certificate, where applicable
  • Railway service certificate, for serving Railway staff claiming relaxation

[check] The source gives no complete document list, so confirm it in the notification.

What Happens After Selection

Candidates who clear the CBT (and the Translation Test where it applies) go through document verification and the medical examination for the post's standard. [check] Training, probation and posting details are not given.
