Income tax is not deducted above. It depends on your regime choice, declared investments and total income, so a single figure here would mislead more than it helps — treat this as your salary before tax. Professional tax, where your state levies it, is also excluded. Figures are an estimate based on the 7th CPC structure; your actual pay slip governs.

What a Sub Inspector (CPO) Actually Does

SSC CPO fills Sub Inspector posts in Delhi Police and in the Central Armed Police Forces. A Delhi Police SI investigates cases, records statements, files charge sheets and leads a team at a police station — a public-facing law enforcement role from day one. A CAPF SI leads a section in a paramilitary setting, closer to a supervisory field command than to investigation work. Same exam, two quite different careers.

Pay Level and Starting Salary

The post is on 7th CPC Pay Level 6, where the pay matrix begins at ₹35,400. That basic figure is the one quoted in notifications and the one most applicants see first — and it is also the one that causes the most confusion, because it is neither what you earn nor what you receive. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added to it, and NPS and CGHS come off, before anything reaches your account.

On the defaults above — entry-level basic, DA at 60%, Y-class city, and ₹5,000 of ration money / special allowances — gross comes to about ₹71,600 and in-hand to roughly ₹65,486 before income tax. Move to an X-class city and HRA rises from 20% to 30% of basic; move to a Z-class posting and it falls to 10%. That single variable moves the monthly figure more than anything else in your control.

How the Salary Is Built Up

Every central government salary is assembled the same way, and understanding the parts makes the number predictable rather than mysterious.

  • Basic pay — your cell in the pay matrix. It rises by one annual increment of 3%, and jumps to a higher level on promotion.
  • Dearness allowance — inflation compensation, a percentage of basic revised every January and July. It is the largest single addition and the reason the same post pays visibly more each year.
  • House rent allowance — 30%, 20% or 10% of basic for X, Y and Z class cities. Forfeited if you accept government accommodation.
  • Transport allowance — a fixed amount by pay level and city, with DA applied on top of it. The DA-on-TPA step is the one most hand-built calculators miss.
  • NPS — 10% of basic plus DA, deducted and matched by a 14% government contribution into your pension account. Money that leaves your salary but not your wealth.
  • CGHS — a monthly health scheme contribution set by pay level, giving access to CGHS dispensaries and empanelled hospitals.

Allowances Specific to This Post

Beyond DA, HRA and transport allowance, CAPF personnel draw ration money and risk and hardship allowance where deployment attracts it. Delhi Police SIs draw a different allowance set and are posted almost entirely in an X-class city, giving 30% HRA. Departmental accommodation is common in both, and taking it means forfeiting HRA.

Eligibility and Selection

A bachelor's degree in any discipline, with age typically 20–25 and the usual relaxations. Selection runs through Paper 1, a Physical Endurance and Standard Test, Paper 2, and a detailed medical. Male candidates for Delhi Police SI additionally require a valid LMV driving licence. The physical stage is a genuine filter rather than a formality.

Recruitment is conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through SSC CPO. Eligibility and pay are restated in each cycle's notification, and the notification governs — check the figures there against what you read anywhere else, including here.

Promotion Path and Salary at Each Stage

The entry figure is the start of a ladder, not the whole story. Each promotion moves you to a higher pay matrix level, and because DA, HRA and the transport allowance are all calculated on basic pay, a level jump raises every component at once. The table shows what each stage pays on the day you reach it — before the annual increments that accumulate while you serve in the grade.

StageLevelBasic on promotionIn-hand
Sub Inspector6₹35,400₹65,486
Inspector7₹44,900₹80,866
Assistant Commandant / ACP10₹56,100₹1,02,114

On these assumptions, moving from Sub Inspector to Assistant Commandant / ACP is worth about ₹36,628 a month in take-home — 56% more than at entry, before counting the increments earned along the way.

Grade names and pay levels differ between zones, departments and cadres, and promotion rules are set by departmental orders rather than the recruitment notification. Treat this ladder as the usual shape of the career, and confirm your own department's rules.

Career Growth and Future Salary

Delhi Police runs Sub Inspector to Inspector, then Assistant Commissioner of Police, largely on seniority with departmental examinations available. CAPF runs Sub Inspector to Inspector, then Assistant Commandant at Level 10, which is a gazetted rank. Both ladders are slower than the SSC CGL routes but reach genuine command positions.

The Honest Picture

This is one of the few entry-level government posts at Level 6 available directly to a graduate, and the reason it is heavily contested. It is also demanding: long and unpredictable hours, public scrutiny in the police role, and deployment far from home in the CAPF role. Choose between Delhi Police and CAPF deliberately in your preference list, because the two careers diverge sharply after selection.

Common Questions
What is the in-hand salary of a Sub Inspector (CPO)?
At the starting basic of ₹35,400 on Pay Level 6, with DA at 60% and Y-class HRA, the in-hand figure works out to roughly ₹65,486 a month before income tax, including ₹5,000 of ration money / special allowances. It varies with your city, your DA rate at the time, and your accumulated increments — use the calculator above with your own figures.
What is the pay level and basic pay for Sub Inspector (CPO)?
The post sits at 7th CPC Pay Level 6, where the first cell of the pay matrix is ₹35,400. Basic pay rises by one increment (3%) each year, so a serving employee's basic will be above the entry figure.
Why is in-hand salary lower than gross salary?
Gross is everything credited before deductions. From it come the NPS contribution at 10% of basic plus DA, the CGHS contribution set by your pay level, and income tax. Professional tax also applies in states that levy it. The gap between gross and what reaches your account is usually 12-18% before income tax.
Does this calculator include income tax?
No, and that is deliberate. Income tax depends on your regime choice, declared investments, other income and applicable deductions — a single number would be wrong for most people. Treat the in-hand figure here as your salary before income tax.
How often does DA change?
Dearness allowance is revised twice a year, effective from January and July, and announced some months later with arrears. Because it applies to basic pay and to transport allowance, a DA revision raises the whole package, which is why the rate is an editable field here rather than a fixed number.
What is the promotion after Sub Inspector (CPO)?
The usual next grade is Inspector at Pay Level 7, where basic pay starts at ₹44,900 — about ₹15,380 a month more in hand on the same assumptions. The full ladder runs Sub Inspector → Inspector → Assistant Commandant / ACP. Grade names and levels vary between zones and departments, and promotion rules come from departmental orders rather than the recruitment notification.
How does Sub Inspector (CPO) salary grow over a career?
Delhi Police runs Sub Inspector to Inspector, then Assistant Commissioner of Police, largely on seniority with departmental examinations available. CAPF runs Sub Inspector to Inspector, then Assistant Commandant at Level 10, which is a gazetted rank. Both ladders are slower than the SSC CGL routes but reach genuine command positions.
