What a Station Master Actually Does
A Station Master controls train movement through a station — authorising departures, setting routes and signals, coordinating with the section controller and adjacent stations, and taking charge during any disruption or accident on their section. It is the highest pay level offered through RRB NTPC and one of the few entry-level government posts carrying direct operational authority from day one.
Pay Level and Starting Salary
The post is on 7th CPC Pay Level 6, where the pay matrix begins at ₹35,400. That basic figure is the one quoted in notifications and the one most applicants see first — and it is also the one that causes the most confusion, because it is neither what you earn nor what you receive. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added to it, and NPS and CGHS come off, before anything reaches your account.
On the defaults above — entry-level basic, DA at 60%, Y-class city — gross comes to about ₹66,600 and in-hand to roughly ₹60,486 before income tax. Move to an X-class city and HRA rises from 20% to 30% of basic; move to a Z-class posting and it falls to 10%. That single variable moves the monthly figure more than anything else in your control.
How the Salary Is Built Up
Every central government salary is assembled the same way, and understanding the parts makes the number predictable rather than mysterious.
- Basic pay — your cell in the pay matrix. It rises by one annual increment of 3%, and jumps to a higher level on promotion.
- Dearness allowance — inflation compensation, a percentage of basic revised every January and July. It is the largest single addition and the reason the same post pays visibly more each year.
- House rent allowance — 30%, 20% or 10% of basic for X, Y and Z class cities. Forfeited if you accept government accommodation.
- Transport allowance — a fixed amount by pay level and city, with DA applied on top of it. The DA-on-TPA step is the one most hand-built calculators miss.
- NPS — 10% of basic plus DA, deducted and matched by a 14% government contribution into your pension account. Money that leaves your salary but not your wealth.
- CGHS — a monthly health scheme contribution set by pay level, giving access to CGHS dispensaries and empanelled hospitals.
Allowances Specific to This Post
Station Masters draw night duty allowance for the rotating shift roster, and railway passes for family travel. Those posted at busier stations may draw additional operational allowances. Station accommodation is often available at or near the station, which materially changes the value of the package — though accepting it means forfeiting HRA.
Eligibility and Selection
A degree in any discipline from a recognised university, typically with an age range of 18–36 and the usual relaxations. Selection runs through CBT 1, CBT 2, a Computer Based Aptitude Test that is mandatory for this post specifically, and then document verification and a medical at the A-2 standard.

Departmental examinations open a path towards Group B gazetted posts. Because the post already starts at Level 6, the ceiling reachable within a career is meaningfully higher than for other NTPC entry posts.

The responsibility is real and immediate: signal and movement decisions carry safety consequences, and a Station Master on duty is accountable for their section. Shifts rotate through nights and holidays, and postings often begin at small stations far from home.
