SSC CGL vs SSC CHSL vs SSC MTS: What's the Difference?

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) doesn't run one single exam — it runs several, each aimed at a different qualification level and post type.

SSC CGL — Combined Graduate Level

For graduate-level posts across Central Government ministries and departments — roles like Inspector, Auditor, or Assistant. Requires a graduate degree in any discipline (some specific posts add subject requirements).

SSC CHSL — Combined Higher Secondary Level

For posts like Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC), Data Entry Operator, and Postal Assistant. Requires 12th pass (higher secondary) — a degree is not required and in some cases not even preferred.

SSC MTS — Multi Tasking Staff

Entry-level support roles across government offices. Requires only 10th pass (matriculation), making it the most accessible SSC exam by qualification.

Which one should you apply for?

Match your actual qualification to the exam's requirement — applying above your qualification level isn't possible (you'd be rejected at document verification even if you cleared the exam), and applying below it is allowed but means competing for a role pitched at a lower qualification level than you hold.
