How to Apply for a Government Job: Step-by-Step

The general process behind almost every Central Government recruitment — from finding a genuine notification to downloading your admit card.

Almost every Central Government recruitment — SSC, Railway, Banking, Defence, or a PSU — follows the same broad process, even though the exact portal and dates differ each time.

1. Find the official notification

Start from the organization's own official website (SSC's is ssc.nic.in, UPSC's is upsc.gov.in, and so on), not a third-party site claiming to have "exclusive" access. The notification PDF is the only authoritative source for eligibility, dates, and fees.

2. Check eligibility carefully

Every notification specifies qualification, age limit (as on a specific "reckoning date," not the date you apply), and sometimes physical or category-based criteria. Read this section before you register — applying for a post you don't qualify for wastes the application fee and your time.

3. Register and fill the application

Most recruiters use "One Time Registration" (OTR) systems now, so you register once and reuse your profile for future applications with the same body. Fill in your details exactly as they appear on your identity documents — mismatches cause problems later at the document verification stage.

4. Upload photo and signature

5. Pay the application fee (if applicable)

Many categories (SC/ST/PwD/women, depending on the recruiter) are exempted from the fee — check the notification's fee section before paying. Keep the payment receipt.

6. Download your admit card

Released closer to the exam date, usually from the same portal you applied on. It will not be emailed to you automatically in most cases — check the website directly.

7. Appear for the exam and track results

Selection usually happens in stages (written exam, sometimes followed by skill test, physical test, or interview). Each stage's result is published separately, and only qualifying candidates move to the next stage.

Throughout this process: no genuine recruiter will ever ask you to pay for a job offer, a "guaranteed" selection, or a Certificate of Sponsorship-equivalent document. If someone does, it's a scam.
